The holiday season is a busy time, so you probably didn’t have a chance to run to the bank over Christmas break. If you have some in-person banking tasks to finish up before the new year, you may be wondering, Are banks open on New Year’s Eve 2025? Here’s what you need to know.

Are Banks Open on New Year’s Eve 2025?

If you’re planning to use your holiday time off to run some errands, you may be wondering, Are banks open on New Year’s Eve? Despite being widely celebrated, New Year’s Eve isn’t actually a federal holiday, so banks usually don’t observe it. That said, your bank may close early that day or observe different hours.

Are Banks Open on New Year’s Day 2026?

Since New Year’s Day is a federal holiday, banks will be closed on Thursday, January 1, 2026. So you’ll either have to plan ahead and visit the bank on Wednesday, December 31, or wait until Friday, January 2.

Don’t forget that some banks have limited hours on New Year’s Eve and may close in the early afternoon. If you’re hoping to finish up your banking tasks on December 31, make sure you run your errands early enough!

Use the ATM or Online Banking Instead

Luckily, online banking services are still available even when your local branch is closed. You’ll still be able to complete important tasks like transferring funds and paying your bills on your bank’s website or mobile app during the holiday break. However, keep in mind that transactions might not be processed until your bank reopens on January 2.

If you need to withdraw cash, you’ll probably be able to find an ATM that’s still in service. Many drive-thru ATMs are open 24/7, even when the bank itself is closed.

2026 Holiday Bank Schedule

If you’re wondering, “Are banks open on New Year’s Eve?” you may also be curious about the entire 2026 holiday schedule. In the year ahead, you can expect banks and credit unions to be closed on the following federal holidays:

  • New Year’s Day – Thursday, January 1
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Monday, January 19
  • Presidents Day – Monday, February 16
  • Memorial Day – Monday, May 25
  • Juneteenth National Independence Day – Friday, June 19
  • Independence Day – Saturday, July 4 (observed Friday, July 3)
  • Labor Day – Monday, September 7
  • Columbus Day – Monday, October 12
  • Veterans Day – Wednesday, November 11
  • Thanksgiving – Thursday, November 26
  • Christmas Day – Friday, December 25

If a holiday falls on a weekend, banks will often observe it on the preceding or following business day instead. It should also be noted that some banks will have altered business hours in the days surrounding the holiday. For instance, some branches may choose to close early on Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve. So, it’s always a good idea to check their hours ahead of time if you’re planning to run some errands.
